Full-length contemporary novel from Hollis Shiloh - sweet gay romance

When Mike meets Harry, he can't forget the guy, even when he proves difficult to find again. A second chance meeting gives him another shot, but Harry proves wary and skittish. Burned before, he's not quick to trust, even though they both like music and Mike wants Harry to try out for his Oldies-playing garage band.

Harry's life has taught him he's a loser. He plays songs for money in the park and works as a part-time waiter. But somehow quiet, geeky Mike sees him as the beautiful, funny, and talented guy he'd love to date.

Their love of music both brings them together and threatens to tear them apart. Can two ordinary guys find love, despite the challenges life throws their ways?

"Salt. Pepper. Ketchup. Mustard." Harry put down the different packets and paper cups of sauce with a look of satisfied concentration. He ripped open a salt packet and spilled it over his fries. "Here, you can have some if you want."

"After you put a Mt. Kilimanjaro of salt on top? No thanks!"

"Oh, watching your blood pressure, Old Timer?" He popped two more fries in his mouth and kicked Mike lightly under the table with his shoe.

"You know, I can't figure you out." Mike leaned his elbows on the table and leaned forward. "One minute you're happy as a clam, the next you're—"

"That's a cliché."

"What?"

"'As a clam.' How do we know if clams are happy or not? I think if I was a clam, I wouldn't be happy at all. There's an awful lot of chowder going around these days."

Mike snorted in laughter. "All right." He sat back with a smile, surrendering. "I'll stop. Enough with the 'Twenty Questions.'"

"Thanks," said Harry more seriously. He had a slightly more contented look about him now, as he stuffed another fry in his cheek, and then began to open his salad and burger. "Seriously, I could eat these things all night. Is it wrong to admit that?"

"No, but it's wrong not to share." Mike reached across and snagged a couple of fries.

"Hey! What happened to Mt. Killawatt? If that's the way it is, I'm taking—"

He reached across and grabbed the chicken sandwich.

"My whole sandwich! That's hardly fair! Give it—" He reached across, but not very seriously.

Harry took one big bite and handed it back, eyes flashing. "Just a bite," he said indistinctly. Mike saw the laughing challenge in those eyes. For some reason, Harry wanted to push him. It was teasing, and it wasn't, too. It was like Harry needed Mike to prove himself or something.

With a scolding look, Mike accepted the sandwich back, snagged a few more fries, and sat back to eat. The edge was soon off his hunger, but Harry continued to eat steadily, with concentration.

"Don't they feed you at the diner?"

Harry shook his head. "Don't get many breaks either."

"And why don't you have a website?"

Harry shot him a hard look, almost a glare. "I thought you were done with questions? All right. I'm bad with computers. Don't have one at home, and I can't afford my own. Why would I want one? I'm bad with them. I could use the library's, I guess, or—"

"Mine," said Mike. "I'll help you set up a website." What was a little website between friends?

Harry looked troubled. "Thanks, but I don't…I don't know anything about it. And I can't afford—"

"For free, of course."

"Well, even so, I'm really bad at computers, Mike." Harry leaned forward. "You say you'll help, but you'd really have to do, well, all of it. One time in computer science, I almost blew one of the monitors up. Hand on my heart, it was freaky. They didn't let me touch anything with a cord.

This book is far too long. I read exactly 38% of it and then forwarded to the last few pages. I lost interest about 15% in but tried to stick with it as I thought the main character would grow up and stop being so whiney. That did not happen. The book could have ended after that 38% because the same drama was just rehashed and rehashed and rehashed. I'm actually a fan of this author's work but this was not the best effort that I've read. Also, many an editing issue exists in the bits that I did read.

Songs By Heart edition by Hollis Shiloh Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I enjoyed this 'first love' story because even though both our guys had relationships (or sorry excuses for relationships) this was their first time falling in love. It was neat how their relationship developed, and I adored the romance and lovemaking.

In a fairy tale world, love would be that force that gives you home, strength, faith, and the expression of that love would be whatever you needed most at the time, and I got that a lot in this book.

Very rarely, the story felt long but I also didn't want to leave this universe. Some parts were painful because love that is so all-encompassing to be one's everything is naturally going to have that omnipresent terror of What If? But it made for a much better story and the way it comes together was lovely.
If you are comfortable with the genre, to my taste Hollis Shiloh's sweet romances are tops. I like the romance and the lack of explicit sex. This book appealed to me because the story does not end when the lovers get together. Like most of us, they find that there of plenty of obstacles to overcome once you commit to a relationship. To me, this is a missing ingredient in the whole romance genre. I guess I took off a star because I was a little impatient with Harry and his lack of self-confidence. But then, I know first hand how a hyper-critical parent can sabotage you. Maybe 4 and a half stars. Keep writing, Hollis, so we can keep reading.
Songs By Heart is Hollis Shiloh's first full length novel. It has everything I've come to expect from her books and more! The characters are so real that they walked right off the page and into my heart. Harry and Mike are irresistibly drawn to each other. Although they are different people, with unique personalities and separate insecurities, their caring hearts and shared love of music are the ties that bind them together. Their road to love isn't easy; past relationships, complicated family dynamics, and separate career paths threaten to drive them apart. Despite the challenges, they are committed to their love; and just as they've found the confidence to begin building their future, Harry receives a once-in-a-lifetime offer when he's accepted onto a reality TV show. Suddenly, all bets are off, and the future they envisioned together starts to take a path that neither man ever dreamed existed.

Filled with unexpected twists, emotional highs and lows, the tasteful and tenderly written love scenes that Shiloh is best known for, and some truly inspired movie quotes, Songs By Heart will carry you away. The full length of this novel compounds upon the beautiful character development found in Shiloh's previous short stories. I read it once to capture the essence of the story and then read it again just to savor the experience. It compelled me to laugh out loud, inspired a few tears, and made me want to make Mike and Harry part of my family.

It's possible that you won't love this book as much as I did, but if you are a fan of M/M romance... or romance in general... this is one story that you simply MUST read.
Dragging story, with no real conflict. It could've been an engaging story, with a really good premise, but the author wasn't able to pull it off imho. Character development was ok for one of the MCs, but the other one's personality (Mike's) left me confused as to his state of mind.
